TNS Astronomical Transient Report No. 19971 [ 2018TNSTR.922....1N ]

Date Received (UTC): 2018-07-04 12:05:18
Sender: Mr. Richard Nowell

R. Nowell report/s the discovery of a new astronomical transient.

IAU Designation: AT 2016jie
Coordinates (J2000): RA = 13:13:25.512 (198.3563) DEC = +00:41:20.40 (0.689)
Discovery date: 2016-06-07 00:37:59 (JD=2457546.5263773)

Potential host galaxy: SDSS J131325.47+004114.5
Host redshift: 0.073

Remarks: This transient was noticed on the Galaxy Zoo website in a discussion started by participant Wilde1. Other participants are: Rick Nowell, A. F. Jonkeren. The address of that discussion is here: https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/zookeeper/galaxy-zoo/talk/subjects/20685458. The DECaLS browser address that shows the transient image is here: http://www.legacysurvey.org/viewer?ra=198.3563&dec=0.6890&zoom=16&layer=decals-dr5.

Photometry

Discovery (first detection):
Discovery date: 2016-06-07 00:37:59
Flux: 19.26 ABMag
Filter: R-Cousins
Instrument: DECAM
Telescope: CTIO - 4-m Victor M. Blanco Telescope

Remarks: The Apparent magnitude was calculated by using APT and reference star: SDSS J131328.15+004140.7 http://cas.sdss.org/dr9/en/tools/explore/obj.asp?id=1237648722312495339 (DECaLS photometry). As the object is only visible in one DECaLS r-band cutout, additional calculations were made to find the Absolute magnitude, which is -18.46 (no K correction). This matches well with other known Absolute magnitudes for transients and so serves as confirmation.

Last non-detection:
Archival info: SDSS
