Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) shows that it matches with SN 1999cp at t = -14 days from the maximum light. Given a recession velocity of 1794 km/s for the host galaxy NGC 3254, an expansion velocity of about 16000 km/s can be derived from the absorption minimum of Si II 6355. A dip at the redder wing of Si II 6355 can be contributed to the absorption of C II 6580 at the similar velocity.

Andrew Howell, Curtis McCully, Stefano ValentiGlobal SN ProjectSN Ia0.00452Global SN ProjectUsing Superfit (Howell et al. 2005, ApJ, 634, 1190) and SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024), we find good fits to several young Type Ia supernovae at the redshift of the host galaxy (z=0.00452; value from NED but in agreement with fits). The apparent magnitude reported upon discovery by Koichi Itagaki on 2019-01-09 15:57:35 was 17.8 in the clear filter. Adopting the mean distance modulus of 32.2 from NED, this corresponds to an absolute magnitude of -14.4. We measure a Si II 6355 velocity of -16,000 km/s and a Ca II NIR triplet velocity of -20,000 km/s. The absolute magnitude and the broad high-velocity features suggest this maybe as early as ~2 weeks before maximum.

Comments

This transient was observed on 2019 01 16.99278 by Massimo Caimmi from C92 - Valdicerro Observatory, Loreto (AN) Italy using 0.24-m f/6.5 SCT + CCD Atik 314L in the course of Italian Supernovae Search Project (ISSP). Stack of 45 unfiltered b2x2 frames x 30sec unguided exposures, show the source at 13.9 Mag. End figures for astrometry were AR. 21.99s DEC. 38.5" position measured from UCAC-4 reference stars catalogue, but not perfect due high turbolence.
