462016-01-27 02:02:41lgalbanyLluís GalbanyNoneSN II0.0141From ATEL#8541: We report optical spectroscopy of the supernova candidate PSNJ 09195286-6854419. The spectrum (390-990nm) was obtained on UT 2016 Jan. 12.3 with the LDSS3 mounted to the Clay telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. The object is similar to that of a type-II supernova at a few weeks post-explosion, clearly showing H-alpha and H-beta absorptions and strong Fe lines characteristic of this SN type. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ 666, 1024) gives a best match to SN 2006bp at +34 days since explosion. Correcting for the redshift of its host galaxy, PGC 26383 (0.011208), its expansion velocity is around 7780 km/s measured from the H-alpha absorption minimum.

Andrew Howell, Curtis McCully, Craig PellegrinoGlobal SN ProjectSN Ia0.0106211Global SN ProjectUsing Superfit (Howell et al. 2005, ApJ, 634, 1190) and SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024), we find best fits to SNe Ia, including SN 2005cf between two weeks and one week before max. The supernova is closest to IC 5173B (z = 0.010621, 20096dF...C...0000J; value from NED). Assuming this redshift, we measure a Si II velocity of approximately 17,000 km/s from the 6347/6371 doublet, and a Ca II velocity of approximately 20,000 km/s from the NIR triplet. The B-band absolute magnitude roughly coeval with the spectrum is approximately -16.8. The absolute magnitude and high velocities indicate that the SN is young. Further followup is encouraged.

We obtained 20x45 sec exposures on source. The spectrum shows strong Balmer lines in emission, as well as multiple Fe II and O I features, consistent with a nova in the LMC and with the spectrum reported in ATel #11610 by Chomiuk et al.
