ATEL #8651) based on a visual-wavelength spectrum obtained on Feb. 9.2 UT with the 2.5-m du Pont Telescope (+ WFCCD) at LCO. The spectrum exhibits prevalent Na-I D absorption at the redshift of NGC 5128 characterized by an equivalent width of 0.44-nm. An additional feature coincident with the 578.0-nm diffuse interstellar band is measured to have an equivalent width of 0.06-nm, suggesting an A(V) value between 2 to 4 mag (Phillips et al. 2013, ApJ, 779, 38). Given the significant reddening the blue portion of the spectrum has very low signal-to-noise, however discernible features are present in the red portion of the spectrum that we attribute to H-alpha, the Ca-II near-infrared triplet, and Mg-II 922.7-nm. After manually de-reddening the spectrum assuming E(B-V)=1.0 and Rv=3.1 and then using the spectral identification tool superfit (Howell et al, 2005, ApJ, 634, 119), we find the spectrum of AT 2016adj to best resemble the Type-Ib supernova 1999dn around a week past maximum. This is in contrast to the Type II supernova classification previously reported (cf. ATEL #8655). Furthermore, close inspection of the spectrum reveals shallow absorption features at the expected wavelengths of He-I 667.8-nm and He-I 706.5-nm. Further observations are warranted to secure this classification. In addition, optical photometry was also computed from multiple images taken on Feb. 9.2 UT under photometric conditions with the 1-m Swope Telescope (+ e2v CCD camera) located at LCO. Computed photometry is as follows: filter u 18.943 +/- 0.040 filter B 17.395 +/- 0.041 filter g 16.565 +/- 0.038 filter V 15.701 +/- 0.031 filter r 14.613 +/- 0.021 filter i 13.304 +/- 0.017

Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) and chi2-by-eye shows that the best matches are the spectra of SN2007if ("super-chandra") and SN2002ic (Ia-CSM) a few days after max, but there are also reasonably good matches with some SN1991T-like SNe. After correcting the spectrum for the redshift of the host galaxy (z=0.02997 from 6dF), we measure a Si II 635.5nm expansion velocity of ~12000 km/s.

There is a star very close to the new transient point source. I do feel that the position is slightly different however it is possible that this is the same star. Follow up is recommended.

We also detect a broad absorption feature to the blue of H-alpha at 6215 Angstroms, which is seen in some spectra of young Type II SN and has been identified as the Si II 6355 feature. The velocity of this profile would be -6700 km/s if its Si II.

The new object doesn't appear to move on four diiferent images made during the search and a seach in MPChecker doesn't show any know asteroids of coments in the area. We tried to obtain remote control observations from Mexico and Australia but weather doesn't permit any. The place of the newly found object was searched also for stars from USNO A2 catalogue and nothing was recorded there as well. Astrometry calculations were made from the web page www.astrometry.net and the images were compared in Aladin java applet from CDS. I've searched throught the AT list in TNS and also the web page Bright Supernovae doesn't report any PSN in that area as well.

The spectrum was found serendipitously in an integral field spectroscopy observation of the galaxy within the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We extracted a 2-arcsec aperture spectrum at that location and used GELATO (Harutyunyan et al., 2008, A&A, 488, 383) to compare it to a set of spectra of several SN types. The best fit was to SN Ic 2004gk at +134 days past max, although fits of similar quality arre found to SN Ib 2009jf at +83 days past max. The main nebular lines of stripped envelope SNe are found in the spectrum: Mg I] λ4571, [O I] λλ6300,6364, [Ca II] λλ7291,7323, [O II] λλ7320,7330, and Ca II NIR. Considering that the object was discovered on Sep 21st 2016 and the last non-detection was four months before the discovery (May 5th 2016), the spectrum is from 108 days after discovery, which puts a lower limit for the actual epoch.
