McCully (LCOGT/UCSB)LCOGT SN-KPSN Ia0.0451LCOGT SN-KPWe obtained a spectrum of AT 2016D on 2016 January 17.5 UT with the LCOGT robotic FLOYDS instrument mounted on the Faulkes Telescope South. Using Superfit (Howell et al. 2005, ApJ, 634, 119) and SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024), we find good fits to a Type Ia supernova 2-3 weeks after maximum light at the redshift of the host galaxy (z=0.045; Huchra et al. 2012, ApJS, 199, 26). A similar classification (obtained with different data) was first reported by Hounsell et al. (2016, ATel 8546). We find the spectrum to be highly reddened with E(B-V) ~ 1.1. Correcting for some of the host galaxy contamination we find that the SN magnitude is V~18.7 (corresponding to an absolute magnitude of -17.8 at the observed redshift).

The spectrum is consistent with a Type Ia supernova at around maximum light. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ. 666, 1024) shows that it matches with SN 1995E at t = +1 days. Adopting a redshift of 0.046 for its host galaxy SDSS J101917.64+044543.9, an expansion velocity of about 10,500 km/s can be derived from the absorption minimum of Si II 635.5 nm.

The spectrum is consistent with a Type Ia supernova at around maximum light. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, ApJ. 666, 1024) shows that it matches with SN 2003du at t = -1 days. Adopting a redshift of 0.0307 for its host galaxy NGC 1562, an expansion velocity of about 11,500 km/s can be derived from the absorption minimum of Si II 635.5 nm.
