6362016-12-09 15:31:02DAO_OTSDave BalamDAO_OTSSN Ia0.041DAO_OTSA spectrum of AT2016itb was obtained using the 1.82-m Plaskett telescope (National Research Council of Canada) covering the range 374-706 nm(resolution 0.35 nm) on UT Dec. 8.28 that reveals the object to be a type-Ia (normal) supernova near maximum light. Cross-correlation of the spectrum with a template library using SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024) has yielded a fit to the type-Ia supernova 1994D at maximum. A faint and un-catalogued probable host galaxy is located 3 seconds of arc to the south-west of the supernova position. Our spectrum fit implies a redshift of the order z = 0.04.

No stellar source is visible at the position of the PNV in our last images on Dec. 18.6875. No known minor planets are marked in that position for the time of our observation.

Conseil reports the discovery of a possible nova in M31 on 3 images taken with Slooh robotic telescope T2 (17" Corrected Dalh-Kirkham F/6.8, clear filter) on Dec 27th at 20h29 UTC. The transient is at mag 16.9 (UCAC4-V for ref). The Minor Planet Checker reports no asteroid known at this location at this time. The object is very close to M31N 2007-11f

The new object approximately located at R.A.=13h26m01s.99 Decl.=+02°17'00".8 (equinox 2000.0).Which is about 1.6" west and 10.8" north of the center of the PGC 1221823.

Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) suggests this observation of SN 2017B best matches a normal type Ia ~1 month after peak.

Given that the discovery magnitude was 18.5 mag, corresponding to an absolute magnitude of ~-11 mag (Tully 1988, Nearby Galaxy Catalog; Sharina, Karachentsev, & Tikhonov 1999, AstL, 25, 322; via NED), we conclude that the transient is likely an extragalactic LBV outburst (i.e. a supernova impostor).
