Wiggins, Tooele, UT, USA, reports his discovery of a possible supernova (mag about 15.5) on an unfiltered CCD frame taken 2017 Nov 30 10:42:24 UT using a 0.35-m f/5.5 reflector near Erda, UT, USA. The new object is located at R.A. 14h06m23.11s, Decl. +50°43’20.2” (equinox 2000.0), about 15” SE of the center of NGC 5480.

Checked Minor Planet Center for asteroids and VSX for variable stars.

The transient (mag approximately 17.9) on one 40-s survey image (limiting mag about 19.5) taken by Xing Gao in Xingming Observatory Sky Survey(C42) around Dec. 13.80951, 2017, using a unfiltered CCD ( + Celestron C14 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope D=356-mm @f/6.9 ). The new object approximately located at R.A.=02h29m49.53s +45d46'51".4 (equinox 2000.0). Which is about 7.7" east and 18.5" north of the center of the 2MASX J02294877+4546331. Strong nebular emission at the redshift of the host is superimposed on the supernova spectrum. Note that a previous spectroscopic report as 'Galaxy' (ATel #11069) given to this transient was most probably due to a mistake in the coordinates originally uploaded to the TNS.

The spectrum resembles that of the broad line Type Ic SNe 2002ap and 1997ef about 10-15 days after light curve peak. A fairly good match is also obtained with that of a normal Type Ic event such as SN 2004ew (Taubenberger et al. 2006, MNRAS, 371, 1459) at a slightly earlier phase (3-5 days after maximum). We note that a prominent narrow interstellar Na I doublet is observed in absorption at the host galaxy redshift, with an EW = 3.6 A, suggesting significant line-of-sight reddening. The redshift of NGC 6798 is from Theureau et al. 1998, A&AS, 130, 333.

The second image of this transient taken on remote in the same night at 2018 01 03 T01:10:33 with RC 508mm Telescoipe (iTelescope T11).

Using SNID (Blondin & Tonry, 2007, ApJ, 666, 1024), we find a good match to several Type Ia SNe 10-15 days before maximum brightness. We note that the small number of SNe Ia observed at very early phases often results in a bias to later phases. The SN was discovered at 16.5 mag, which assuming a distance modulus of 31.1 mag for the host galaxy NGC 2525 (Tully et al., 2013, AJ, 146, 86T), corresponds to an absolute magnitude of -14.8 -- or at least 4 mag below peak brightness. This further indicates that the SN is particularly young. If the SN has minimal host reddening, it will peak at V ~ 12 mag. We measure an Si II 6355 velocity of -16,800 km/s. Similarly, we measure a C II 6580 velocity of -15,300 km/s. We detect narrow Ca H&K absorption at the host-galaxy redshift, but do not detect narrow Na D.
