Guhathakurta (UCSC)UCSCLBV0.0061UCSCRed spectrum (black body temperature ~ 4,500 K, assuming no host extinction) with a distinctive narrow H-alpha emission feature (FWHM ~ 1300 km/s), red-shifted at 260 km/s relative to the host (NGC 718, with spectroscopic redshift z = 0.005781). The (observed) absolute magnitude of the transient is M_r = -13.3, and dereddening by an appropriate amount to match the Na D absorption strength (EW ~ 6 Angstroms), we estimate a temperature of 15,700 K and an absolute magnitude of ~ -16. We consider these properties most similar to a reddened LBV outburst, however it is also consistent with a luminous red nova. The spectrum is characteristic of a normal SN Ia around peak. Using SNID to fit the spectrum, the best fitting template is the normal SN Ia 2006cf at +2 days. After correcting the spectrum for the redshift of the host, we measure a Si II 6355 Angs. velocity of 11600 km/s.

Stanek (OSU)ASAS-SNSN Ia1ASAS-SNWe obtained an optical spectrum of ASASSN-17pk/AT2017iji on UT 2017 Nov. 21.5 with FAST mounted on the FLWO 1.5m telescope. The spectrum is that of a normal Type Ia caught early. The best fit templates with SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007) are of normal SN Ia at <~1 week before maximum light After correcting the spectrum for the redshift of the host galaxy (z=0.013493), we measure a Si II 6355 Ang. expansion velocity of 14500 km/s from the minimum of the P-Cygni absorption through.

The transient was first discovered by the volunteer Julio Albornoz in the Milky Way Project (here: https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/povich/milky-way-project/talk/505/209341), which is an astronomy citizen science project. Spitzer MIPS [24] show a source at the same position from 2005-10-02, but WISE images don't show any source at this position in 2010. Grace Wolf-Chase from the Adler Planetarium took part of the discussion as a researcher. Many thanks to Richard Nowell and Alexander Jonkeren for helping me with APT.
