The spectrum is that of a normal SN Ia around maximum light. SNID gives as a best-fit template the normal SN Ia 2003ic at -4 days. After correcting the spectrum by the redshift of the host galaxy, we measure a Si II expansion velocity of 11900 km/s.

It was discovered serendipitously when attempting to observe 2017cms with SNIFS. I've also guessed its magnitude based on its similarity to 2017cms.

9992017-05-18 16:19:09mfraserE. Kankare (QUB) on behalf of NUTSNUTSSN IIn0.0181NUTSNarrow H emission lines, broad P Cygni features of Hbeta and HeI/NaID, and narrow Na ID absorption are detected. The spectrum resembles that of SN 2009ip (Pastorello et al 2013, ApJ, 767, 1; Fraser et al. 2013, MNRAS, 433, 1312), although we cannot rule out some contamination from the host galaxy background. The EW of the Galactic Na ID component is 1.06, and that of the host 2.23. Scaling from the Galactic extinction (Schlafly & Finkbeiner 2011, ApJ, 737, 103) of A_R = 0.34 mag, suggests a total line-of-sight extinction of A_R ~ 1 mag. This yields an absolute magnitude of M ~ -18.5 mag for ASASSN-17fy.

10052017-05-23 18:22:24jlprieto E. Falco (Harvard CfA), J. L. Prieto (UDP; MAS)ASAS-SNSN Ia1ASAS-SNWe obtained an optical spectrum of ASASSN-17gl/AT2017eex on UT 2017 May 23.2 with FAST mounted on the FLWO 1.5m telescope. The spectrum is that of a normal SN Ia at maximum light. Cross-correlation with a library of SN spectra using SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007) shows that ASASSN-17gl is best fit with normal SN Ia at an age of +3 days after maximum light (best-fit template is the spectrum of SN Ia 2001ep at +3 days). After correcting for the host galaxy redshift, we measure a Si II 6355 Angs. expansion velocity of 10800 km/s.
