The helium lines at 588 and 707 nm are clearly observed, with P Cygni minima corresponding to a velocity of ~7000 km/s. The helium line at 668 nm may also be present at the same velocity but blended with narrow H-alpha emission from the host.

This is in contrast to the Type Ia classification in Wevers et al. (ATel #8900), although we also find reasonable matches to the peculiar Type Ia SNe 2002cx and 2005hk.

Given that the discovery magnitude was 18.5 mag, corresponding to an absolute magnitude of ~-11 mag (Tully 1988, Nearby Galaxy Catalog; Sharina, Karachentsev, & Tikhonov 1999, AstL, 25, 322; via NED), we conclude that the transient is likely an extragalactic LBV outburst (i.e. a supernova impostor).

Given these redshifts, the supernova may be associated with the galaxy 2MASX J05002994+7113379, whose redshift is not known, rather than the closer PGC 2741481. If this is the case, it has an unusually large offset of at least ~113 kpc. Alternatively it could be associated with an undetected dwarf galaxy, or with one of two GALEX UV sources, if they are galaxies, at separations of at least ~36 or ~88 kpc.

We classified the event via cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification" code (SNID; Blondin & Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) including the updated templates of Silverman et al. 2012, MNRAS, 425, 1789 and Liu & Modjaz, 2014, arXiv:1405.1437. The spectrum shows that AT2016cpw is a normal Type Ia supernova about one week after peak brightness. SNID identifies spectroscopic similarities to SNe 1994ae, 1995D, and 2007kk, and after correcting for the host galaxy's redshift of z = 0.060362 (2MASX J21412438-1404429; NED) the Si II 635.5 nm absorption minimum indicates an expansion velocity of 12,500 km/s. FilippenkoLOSSSN IIP1LOSSWe report that a CCD spectrum (range 350-1050 nm) of AT2016cyw was obtained on Aug. 02.5 with the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast spectrograph) at Lick Observatory. The object was classified via cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification" code (SNID; Blondin & Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) including the updated templates of Silverman et al. (2012 MNRAS, 425, 1789) and Liu & Modjaz (2014 arXiv:1405.1437). We find that AT2016cyw is a Type IIP supernova likely several months post-explosion. SNID identifies spectroscopic similarities to SNe 2004et and 2004dj. See Astronomer's Telegram #9309.
